"We are all here on this planet, as it were, as tourists. None of us can live here forever. The longest we might live is a hundred years. So while we are here we should try to have a good heart and to make something positive and useful in our lives. Whether we live just a few years or a whole century, it would be truly regrettable and sad if we were to spend that time aggravating the problems that afflict other people, animals, and the environment. The most important thing is to be a good human being.”
This week I saw a car with a bumper sticker that simply said, “Be a good human.”
At that moment I was reminded of my parents and my favorite teachers and the values they instilled in me. This simple phrase actually has deep meaning, especially in today’s world.
So how do we act as “good humans”?
Well, I think we can begin by treating everyone we meet with love, respect and kindness. I used to tell my students to ask themselves the following questions before they said (or posted) something: Is it true? Is it helpful? Is it inspiring? Is it necessary? and is it kind?
If you answer no to one or more of those questions, then maybe what you are about to say should be left unsaid…
Look around you and see the beauty in everyday life. Follow your passions, while respecting those of others. Embrace each and every moment. Don’t forget to take time to laugh and have a good time.
Spend as much time as you can outdoors absorbing the natural world around us while also remembering to take good care of it.
Don’t be afraid to make mistakes and maybe, more importantly, forgive yourself (and others) when we or they do.
In essence, just try to make this world a better place for all of us.
One of the purposes of my newsletter is to remind people of the importance of striving to be the best versions of themselves. It is to inspire and to create hope that even when things aren’t going our way, we can be reassured that there are many kind people in our neighborhoods, our churches, our communities and our world.
I still believe that and I always will.
Life is made up of choices. That’s what makes us unique as human beings. We get to make choices each and every day.
That being said…I choose to be kind. I choose to be compassionate. I choose to love others.
And I will continue to strive to live a life with a passion for working together with people, for a common good.
Most importantly, I will try to never forget to be a good human.
It’s that simple.

What I am watching this week…
If you love stand up comedy, I would suggest Leanne Morgan: I’m Every Woman. Morgan showcases her life via intimate tales about her upbringing in a small town in Tennessee, her almost 20 years of marriage, the challenges of parenting her three children, and her first experience as a grandmother.
I needed to smile more and this did the trick for me. I highly recommend it.

When Your Soul Is Tired~
"I want you to understand that it's okay to have a tender and tired soul.
It's okay to be gentle with yourself, to acknowledge and embrace the emotions you experience, and to let them open up in the depths of your being.
It's okay to not be okay, to feel sadness even if you can't fully understand its origins.
You don't have to live in just one extreme or dwell only in your wounds.
It's important to realize that you exist in many aspects.
You are a complex tapestry woven from hope and despair, and it's okay to navigate this world while learning how to balance the two."
